Even the darkest places teach us something exceptional, and the violent world of Westeros is no exception. Rich in complex characters and even more complicated plotlines, Game of Thrones did not only leave their audience entertained but also dropped some truth bombs that left them with a deeper understanding of life.
Here are a few lessons we learnt from this hit show.
- “Never forget what you are, the rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.”- Tyrion Lannister.
We can’t escape our past. The only way we can move on is when we accept where we come from and what we are. Understanding our weaknesses, working at them, and having faith in ourselves is the only way we move forward.
- “You know Nothing, Jon Snow.”– Ygritte.
Be open to constructive feedback. Learn about things that you do not know. The world is full of different cultures. Always be ready to understand the viewpoints of others. Learn from new experiences and pay heed to the advice of others (only of the people who know better than you.)
- “I have a different perspective, of course”– Lord Varys.
The view can be different from where you stand. Most of the time, we only see one side of the coin. You should have enough courage to be able to see the world from someone else’s eye. It might surprise you as to what you might see.
- “A mind needs books like the sword needs a whetstone.” – Tyrion Lannister.
Knowledge is power. Focus on developing your skills. Books broaden your horizon like nothing else. Improving your skills bit-by-bit and harvesting your mind so that you can become adept in a position/role. Tyrion Lannister and Samwell Tarley, two of the most learned characters throughout the series, are just as valuable as any other fighter in a war.
- “When the snows fall, and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.”– Sansa Stark.
A person is the strongest when they have family/friends for support, for these are the people who would be there to pick you up when you fall, give you a shoulder to cry on, celebrate your victories, and be there with you through thick and thin.
- What do we say to the God of Death?” – Red Woman.
“Not today.” – Arya Stark.
You always have to have faith in yourself. One does not fail when they are defeated but when they give up. Therefore, the next time when you find yourself questioning if you should give up, the only answer you should give yourself is “Not today.”
- “Good, now go fail again.” – Ser Davos.
Failing is not something to be ashamed of. You come out as a stronger and wiser person. If you want to achieve success, you have to be brave enough to taste failure. Failure feels like your world is crumbling down to pieces, and yet you have to be brave enough to get through it.
- “Do not become what you’ve always struggled to defeat”– Lord Varys.
Try to learn from the mistakes of others and never let your ambitions blind you. If you want to fix something rotten, you have to be strong enough to demolish it and rebuild it again in the right way.
